Haudenosaunee Council Square Strategic Planning Cycle

A common Haudenosaunee silver brooch, generally referred to as a council square or council fire, inspired our illustration of the cycle of strategic planning (see figure 2). Historically, this brooch represented a meeting. The outside logs represent the chiefs and clan mothers, and the inside logs represent the firekeepers. The clan mothers and the chiefs received input from the community before making decisions. As we will see, input from the community is key in successful strategic planning.
